Ideally you want a large enough inlet pipe to support the amount of vacuum/flow the turbo needs to ingest, while considering the environment (bends, bead rolls, connections & other frictional losses) & having a mild taper to the size of the compressor wheel (ideally not a straight taper, but a radius) & having a small amount of straight shot to the compressor wheel. Everything is relative & generally in the case of the inlet, bigger is better, until its difficult to make, fit & install. As far as intercooler piping goes its also relative. Ideally you want the air speed inside of the piping to reach 0.4 mach (about 300mph), above that speed and you experience & turbulence , etc. IIRC for a JWT sport 700 2.25" is ideal IF the piping where straight. Since its not & there are additional losses due to bends, silicone connections, bead rolls, mis-alignments, etc. going one size up to 2.5" is "more" ideal for that turbo. With a much larger turbo, you can go even bigger , but during low boost levels you will not be achieving the desired velocity of air & it will increase lag...... I made a vertical flow front mount intercooler for a friend with 2.0" turbo outles to 2.5" pipes to the intercooler & 2.75" out fo the intercooler to the throttle bodies on a 2560 car that is well put together. The owner expressed there was more "lag" with the 2.75" & returned to the 2.5" from the intercooler to the throttle body. We don't have any hard data, just but dyno feeling. This was also on a "small" turbo.....
